Cold therapy mittens for chemo-Ice mittens (pair)
Why use cold mittens for chemo instead of gloves for cold therapy?
Ice mittens tend to be less breathable compared than gloves since normal gloves do have fingers who are not separated, so more cold can be stored inside the mitten.
Price : 79,95€.
The ice therapy gloves are sold per pair.

Advantages
- As a patient, you are not dependent on the availability of a cooling machine in the day center. Your treatment schedule will not face delays
- The cooling temperature lasts up to 90 minutes
- Cooling is applied only where it is medically necessary
- The treatment with ice gloves does not extend the hospital stay.
The treatment can begin 15-30 minutes before infusion administration.
The gloves should be used for 1 to sometimes 2 hours after the end of the treatment (depending on the concentration and the oncologist's advice, and therefore not dependent on the use of a cooling machine).
This will at least be a treatment that provides relief and/or frees up time for patients, staff, and the optimal utilization of cooling machines

Instructions for use - Application of cold therapy mittens for hands
- Follow the product recommendations in the manufacturer's instructions, depending on the duration of use.
The general recommendation from the manufacturer for the treatment of sports injuries is only 20 minutes, but the treatment time for chemotherapy is much longer (see above).
The cooling duration of these cooling elements is up to 90 minutes: the cold packs deliver their performance evenly and over a longer period. - How are they used? Advice for using the cooling cap.
- Between chemotherapy sessions, the cooling elements are stored in the freezer (freeze for at least 2 hours at -18 °C).
The cold therapy mittens can remain in the freezer indefinitely and will remain soft and flexible. - How do I store them in the deep freezer?
In the manufacturer's packaging.
Do not come into contact with food. - On the day of treatment, place in a small cooler.
- How can I keep the cold mittens cold longer in the cooler?
For example, place them in an insulated bag, a towel, a flannel, etc. - Start cooling the hands 10-15 minutes (or 30' *2) before the chemo / or before starting (= dripping) the infusion.
- For cold therapy, place a piece of fabric/insulating material between the cooling pad and the skin.
Suitable interlayers include: a light towel, a piece of fabric, disposable wash gloves, a sheet/pillowcase (cut to size), 6 layers of paper towels, or a jersey. - The infusion solution is administered via an intravenous infusion (drip infusion).
- Keep the cooling mittens on during chemotherapy *.
- After the infusion, the cooling ice gloves should still be worn for 10-15 minutes (or 90' *2) after chemotherapy *.
Own cooling gloves? You can leave with it if allowed (not for driving your car yourself). - *2 The exact duration of treatment is determined by the attending physician.
The total duration also depends on the concentration or strength of the medication and how quickly the medication is "eliminated" via the kidneys. - If you cannot tolerate this cold, you can place a cloth, towel, or other insulating material between the ice mitts and the skin during use.
- Allow the cold therapy gloves to dry before placing it back in the freezer.
- Between chemotherapy sessions, the cooling elements are stored in the freezer (freeze for at least 2 hours at -18 °C).
- If in doubt, consult your attending physician, oncologist, case manager nurse, nurse, or dermatologist.
Recommendations
- We recommend the use of a extra tight handgloves showed good results in limiting blood flow in fingers during chemotherapy in Japanese studies. The same mechanical effect can be expected for you. Other litterature suggest that a combined effect oof cryotherapy and compression seems to give better results (*2.)
Where can I buy a cold therapy mittens for chemo?
You may buy these ice therapy gloves from a medical company, officially registered with the Belgian ministry of economic affairs, division medical devices and the ministry of health, registration as a bachelor hospital nurse.
How can I keep my cold mittens cold longer during chemo or use it for a longer time period?
Put XL isolating socks over your mittens.
These isolating socks serve as external insulation, preventing the cold mittens from warming up from the outside.
This keeps the gloves cooler on the inside for a longer period.
